THE ARCHIVE CARE GUIDE: How to Wash & Preserve Your Retro Kits

Treat them like basic gym wear, and you will ruin a masterpiece. To ensure your ARCHIVE F.C. kits survive the test of time, you must follow the unwritten rules of terrace culture. Here is our non-negotiable protocol for preserving your retro collection.
Rule number one: Never wash your kits above 30°C (86°F). Hot water is the ultimate enemy of printed sponsors and velvet flocking. Before washing, always turn the jersey completely inside out. This creates a crucial protective barrier for the delicate chest crests and back numbers against the friction of the washing machine drum.
If you put a retro kit in the tumble dryer, you might as well throw it away. The intense heat will instantly melt, crack, or peel the sponsors and warp the polyester fibers. Always air dry your shirts by hanging them on a clothesline or a drying rack in the shade. Direct, harsh sunlight can fade those vibrant 90s colors.
Polyester rarely wrinkles, but if you need a sharp look for the streets, step away from the traditional iron. A hot iron will stick to the synthetic fabric and completely melt the sponsor logos. Instead, use a hand-held garment steamer on a low setting, keeping a safe distance from any printed details.
How you store your archive matters. Folding shirts with large front sponsors or heavy back numbers can cause the prints to crease or stick together in humid climates. Invest in high-quality wide hangers (preferably wooden) to maintain the shoulder structure and give your grails the wardrobe space they deserve.
